Rosalia Vila Tobella[2] (born 25 September 1992),[3] known mononymously as Rosalia (Spanish: [rosa'li.a], Catalan: [ruz@'li.@]),[4][5][6] is a Spanish singer. Born and raised in the outskirts of Barcelona The singer is described as an "atypical pop singer" due to her diverse music styles. When she was of 13 she fell in an obsession with Spanish folk music. She then studied musicology at Catalonia College of Music. She was also a guest at weddings and music bars. Mixing flamenco with hip hop and pop music the album produced "Malamente" (single) as well as "Pienso in tu mira (single). Both songs became hugely popular and garnered a lot of critical praise. El Mal Querer was the first artist to bring Rosalia onto the international music stage. [12][13(13) Rosalia experimented with urbano music in her releases in 2019 "Con Altura" and "Yo Ti x Tu x Mi", becoming a global hit. She gave reggaeton an experimental twist on her third album Motomami (2022) and departed from the modern flamenco sound of the album that preceded it. The album's lead singles "La Fama" and "Saoko" have caught the attention of international fans and were the most praised album by Metacritic. Throughout her career, Rosalia has accumulated ten number-one singles in her home country, which is a record for a local artist. Two Grammy Awards, eleven Latin Grammy Awards (including 2 Album of the Year awards) Four MTV Video Music Awards and three UK Music Video Awards have been awarded to Rosalia. Rosalia also won two Premio Ruido Awards. In the year 2019 Billboard awarded her the Rising Star Award for "changing the music of the present day music through her unique flamenco-influenced pop",[18] and became the first singer from Spain in history to be nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys
Rosalia was born on 25 September 1992 in Sant Cugat del Valles and raised in Sant Esteve Sesrovires,[20][21][22] Baix Llobregat, Catalonia. The family she was born into has no artistic heritage, she is the youngest daughter of Pilar Tobella, a businesswoman who owns a small company which specializes in metalworks. Her father, Jose Manuel Vila, was born in Cudillero, Asturias. They divorced in 2019. Her older sister Pilar Vila, who was born in 1989, is her stylist. Rosalia discovered her love for the performing arts in her early years and was particularly interested when she came across the discography of Camaron de la Isla. Her musical education began in the Taller de Musics [es]. She attended a six year program at the academy. She started in the Raval school, and then transferred to the Superior School of Music of Catalonia. [25] She also autonomously performed as an independent artist at weddings and in bars with musical music, for which she was paid "a little over 80 euros or in exchange for dinner". Rosalia was at the mercy of many underground Spanish musicians during this time such as La Zowi and Yung Beef, Kaydy Case, Hinds, Maria Escarmiento, and Kaydy Cain.
